How to Keep a Journal Private, Without an Account or the Cloud

A lot of apps call themselves "private," but the word does a lot of hiding on its own. Here's a practical way to check whether a journal app actually keeps your writing to yourself, and what changes when it does.

Most journal apps promise privacy in their App Store description, then ask you to sign in with an email, sync your entries to a server, and trust a privacy policy you never read. That's not necessarily dishonest, cloud sync is genuinely useful for a lot of people, but it's a different kind of privacy than "nobody but me can read this." If what you want is the second kind, here's what to actually look for.

Five questions that tell you if a journal app is really private

1

Does it require an account?

An email or sign-in means your identity is tied to your entries somewhere outside your device, even if the content itself is encrypted.

2

Does it need the internet to work?

If the app syncs by default, your entries are traveling to a server at some point, and living there too, not just passing through.

3

What happens if someone has your unlocked phone?

A PIN on the app itself is good. It's also worth asking what protects your entries in the moment someone else is actually holding your phone.

4

Can you get your data out, in a format you control?

A real export, not a support ticket, is what stops "private" from turning into "locked in" the day you want to switch apps.

5

What's the company's business model?

A free app with no purchase anywhere has to make money some way, and it's worth knowing what that way is before you write anything sensitive in it.

What changes when a journal is fully offline

I built Yasura around answering all five of those questions the same way: no account, no server, nothing that leaves your device unless you export it yourself. It also has Decoy Mode, which keeps your entries protected if someone else picks up your phone.

The tradeoff worth knowing

Being fully offline means there's no automatic cloud backup either. Your entries are as safe as your device is, so export and back them up yourself every so often, the same way you would any file you care about. It's a real tradeoff, not a hidden catch, and worth weighing against how much you value not having an account at all.
